FUM-Smart Insole

Gait analysis is a systematic study of human locomotion, which can be utilized in various applications such as rehabilitation, clinical diagnostics and sports activities. Various limitations such as cost, non-portability, long setup time, and post-processing time of available gait analysis techniques have made them unfeasible for individual use. This led to an increasing interest for research on developing smart insoles where wearable sensors can be employed to detect vertical ground reaction forces (VGRF) and other gait variables.

Walking plays an essential role in our physical and mental wellness. Many people deal with physical ailments related to abnormal gait. We believe they should be able to track their movement for a healthier life. FUM-Smart Insole has 8 force sensors (FSR) which measure every interaction between foot and ground in great detail. The thickness of the insole reaches 1.3 mm at its most. It is a low-profile wearable device, and does not cause any discomfort. FUM-Smart Insole can provide researchers with a variety of gait parameters including gait phase detection, Center of Pressure (CoP), Vertical Ground Reaction Force (VGRF), cadence, pas, and balance.
