FUM-Lawn Mower
A primary goal of manufacturing robots is to help humans by performing their difficult repetitive tasks. Mowing the lawns and keeping them in good shape is one such repetitive and time-consuming task, especially in large fields, parks, and stadiums. An autonomous robotic lawn mower can then be used to perform lawn cutting as a substitute for human workers.
A typical robotic lawn mower requires the user to set it up once, and then it can automatically cut the lawn in the defined area.
First, the user needs to bury the safe boundary wire around the lawn area, and setup the lawn mower cutting height and speed before starting the robot.
FUM-Lawn Mower incorporates various safety systems to prevent any possible accidents, and thus can be used in public environments (i.e., public parks).
It can detect collisions, lifting and rolling and immediately stop the cutting blade.
It also includes a sonar ranging system to detect obstacles and perform motion-planning accordingly. The cutting blade in FUM-Lawn Mower is a pivoting blade, and folds away when hitting a hard object, which increases the safety of the robot especially in public environments. FUM-Lawn Mower is also equipped with GPS to report the location of robot and minimize the risk of being stolen or lost. The robot control system has 5 different boards including motor control board, blade control board, sonar and sensors board, power management board, and main board.
