FUM-Segway

Segway is a two-wheeled, electrically powered, self-balancing personal transport device invented by Dean Kamen, and introduced to market in 2001. Segway is ridden in standing position with minimum possible space required for turning and maneuvering, making it suitable for personal transport in crowded, cramped or in-door environments. It occupies a small space with its two parallel electrically driven wheels placed very close to each other. The parallel wheel configuration leads to an intrinsically unstable dynamic known as Mobile Inverted Pendulum that is stabilized by using inertial sensors and digital controllers. This illusion of instability induces the feeling of pleasure, making this device an enjoyable sports equipment for entertainment purposes. Segway is also used by security guards and police officers for its patrolling application, and is popular among tourists as a suitable transportation device for sightseeing.

FUM-Segway is designed and manufactured in FUM CARE.
This project started in 2014 and several prototype versions were built until 2018. The final version consists of two 500W SM-PMSM Hub-wheel motors, 1 kWh battery pack, Dual FOC Motor Driver, Inertial controller, steering stick, and steel mechanical frame.

This final version was built solely for demonstration, education and research purposes. All parts except for motors and battery pack were designed by FUM CARE engineering team of bachelor students at the time.
Performance tests showed a maximum speed of 20 km/h, maximum payload of 150 kg and maximum safe climbing slope angle of 15 degrees.

FUM-Segway can be run on fully charged battery for 2-6 hours depending on the intensity of maneuver and ground surface condition.
