FUM-EMG

The EMG device is responsible for recording the electrical movements of the muscle during contraction and relaxation. FUM-EMG is a 16-channel board based on active electrodes. The processor core of this device uses an advanced 32-bit microcontroller with ARM architecture from ST Company which has 512 KB of working memory. In addition to receiving data from various application interfaces, this processor ‌with an 8-bit digital potentiometer called MCP411010 has the ability to determine the amount of signal amplification for specific purposes. Another important task of the main processor is the repeated reading of information from different electrodes, which is done through the analogue-to-digital converter ADC 7683 a quasi differential instrument converter with 16-bit resolution and a sampling rate of 100 kHz. This converter reads the data of one of the input channels every microsecond through a frequent switch between channels with the ADG 506 low noise multiplexer IC. In addition to supplying its 5-volt power supply from a 24-volt battery source, this system also has the ability to supply power from a municipal power supply with the help of a built-in isolated power converter.

The features of FUM-EMG hardware are the following:

Communication Protocol

In addition to the CPU programmer communication protocol, communication with the main board is provided through three USB ports, Wi-Fi module and CAN for various research purposes.

Software Application

The software has two online and offline parts. The online section is able to record, display and filter 16 channels simultaneously. The offline section includes features such as displaying EMG sensor signals both raw and processed, storing data separately in different formats, analyzing EMG signals, displaying the battery charge, and the ability to mark on the signal.

Electrode

Wet Ag/AgCl electrodes with wet conductive gel are commonly used to record biomarkers, which have good electrical properties. However, recently, the basic principles of gel-less electrodes have become known and a number of commercial devices are built with them. In FUM-EMG project, we have developed the EMG device with dry electrodes.
